A 15-year-old student at Buchholz High School in Florida has been arrested following an investigation into his alleged online communications with members and supporters of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organisation. Authorities stated that the teenager was allegedly seeking assistance in developing explosives and drones to carry out an attack at an unidentified location.

According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, deputies and the FBI launched a joint investigation after receiving information about the teenager's online interactions with individuals associated with ISIS. Investigators reportedly discovered that he had requested guidance on building drones and explosive devices intended to target people.

During the initial investigation on Friday, authorities spoke with the teenager's parents, who gave permission for investigators to examine his mobile phone. The search reportedly uncovered files containing instructions related to explosive devices and chemical compounds, along with ISIS propaganda materials.

On Monday, investigators conducted a further search of the teenager's residence with parental consent. During the search, authorities reportedly discovered two jars in his bedroom containing chemicals that the teenager identified as materials used to manufacture triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly dangerous explosive compound.

The discovery raised further concerns about the seriousness of the alleged preparations and the teenager's reported interest in carrying out a potential attack.

Meanwhile, family members expressed uncertainty about the investigation and said they still had several unanswered questions. They declined to provide further comments publicly.

The investigation highlights continuing concerns among US law enforcement agencies about online extremist recruitment and the potential radicalisation of young individuals through terrorist propaganda and digital networks.
