Dressed in women's clothing and heavy makeup, young boys are paraded in front of powerful men, forced to dance, and then sexually abused.

For thousands of impoverished children in Afghanistan, this is the brutal reality of Bacha Bazi — a centuries-old tradition of systemic sexual exploitation that translates literally as “boy play.” It turns vulnerable boys into sex slaves for the country’s elite.

Although the Taliban publicly condemns the practice, Bacha Bazi persists as an open secret across the country.

Survivors describe enduring repeated beatings, rape, and severe psychological trauma. Once they reach puberty and develop facial hair, they are often discarded. Many end up in prostitution, drug addiction, or take their own lives, unable to overcome the lasting damage. Others face further violence when they return to their families. The sharp reduction in international aid since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 has left victims with almost no access to support or rehabilitation services.

This occurs in a nation where homosexuality is punishable by death and pederasty is officially a serious crime.

Despite the Taliban’s ban on Bacha Bazi, a recent US State Department Trafficking in Persons report confirms that the practice remains widespread. The report highlights ongoing child soldier recruitment through coercion and deception, as well as documented cases of Bacha Bazi involving Taliban officials and other armed groups.

The grim reality was starkly illustrated when US Special Forces Captain Dan Quinn was relieved of his command for confronting an American-backed Afghan militia leader who kept a young boy chained to his bed as a sex slave. Quinn later said:

“The reason we were here is because we heard the terrible things the Taliban were doing to people, how they were taking away human rights. But we were putting people into power who would do things that were worse than the Taliban.”
