A 52-year-old Syrian man was sentenced to four and a half years in prison by the Vienna Regional Court on Tuesday for the rape of his six-year-old neighbor’s daughter and related offenses. The verdict, which includes convictions for rape, aggravated sexual abuse of a minor, and possession of child abuse material, is now legally binding.
The man initially denied the allegations but confessed during the trial. According to court statements, he told the judge, “I admit everything,” while claiming the abuse “only happened once.” Both the defendant and the prosecutor accepted the sentence, with no appeal planned.
Details of the Offense
Prosecutors stated that the incident occurred on July 3, 2025, in an apartment complex in Vienna. The man allegedly observed the young girl playing in the courtyard and lured her into his apartment with a lollipop. Once inside, he partially undressed the child and committed sexual acts against her.
The defense offered a differing account, suggesting the girl entered the apartment willingly as the man purportedly intended to bring additional seating to the courtyard area. The defendant himself claimed he had only touched the child.
Extensive Child Abuse Material Discovered
Following his arrest, authorities searched the man’s apartment and seized between 5,500 and 6,000 files containing child sexual abuse material, including images and videos stored across multiple devices. He is also accused of sharing two such videos via WhatsApp and taking more than 160 screenshots from the material.
The case involved an additional allegation: the man reportedly showed another young girl a pornographic film on his cellphone in a park and solicited her for sexual acts. He ultimately ceased denying this charge as well.
Trial Proceedings and Sentencing
At the outset of the trial, the defendant had not confessed. His change of position followed the closed-door testimony of the child victim. His defense attorney described the defendant as suffering from pedophilic disorder and characterized the crime as “horrific and appalling.”
The court imposed a sentence of four and a half years’ imprisonment.
Political Reaction
The case has drawn strong criticism from Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ). Secretary General and Homeland Security Spokesman Michael Schnedlitz called the incident “a horrific result of a completely irresponsible immigration policy.”
In a press release, Schnedlitz stated: “This abhorrent case is yet another bloody example of what the welcoming culture of the established parties has brought upon our homeland: imported crime that stops at nothing and no one, and whose victims are our own children.”
He argued that the Syrian man, who was living on Austrian social welfare, had “forfeited his right to hospitality in the most brutal way imaginable.” Schnedlitz demanded immediate deportation to Syria following the prison term, rather than providing therapy or further support in Austria.
“Every euro spent on imprisonment, the justice system, and therapy for such offenders is one euro too many,” he said. “It is a perversion of the system that we use our hard-earned tax money to finance the ‘full support’ of foreign criminals who deeply despise our society and attack our children.”
Schnedlitz further highlighted that the perpetrator would receive private-level medical care in prison, while the victim faces potential delays in the public healthcare system. He described the volume of child abuse material as evidence of “a ticking time bomb” enabled by open borders policies.
