A Syrian immigrant in Austria says he never encountered the level of lawlessness in Damascus that he now faces in Vienna, where his barbershop has repeatedly been targeted by youth gangs with migrant backgrounds.
Khaled Fayad, 52, who fled Syria with his family in 2015, later established a men's salon in Döbling, one of Vienna’s wealthiest districts.
According to Profil, his business has been attacked six times, including three attempted break-ins in recent months. Surveillance footage reportedly shows groups of youths arriving at night, often carrying tools such as hammers and wrenches.
During successful break-ins, thieves allegedly stole cash, barber equipment, perfumes, and even an e-scooter. Money collected in a donation box for Palestinian children was also taken.
Fayad said audio captured on the security recordings revealed Arabic dialects he identified as Syrian and Iraqi.
“I’m ashamed of them,” he said, noting that in 25 years of working in Damascus, he had never experienced the repeated criminal incidents he now faces in Vienna.
Reports indicate that the suspects include youths from Afghanistan and Syria, along with a smaller number of Austrian nationals.
