Dublin Knife Attack Leaves Young Girl with Lifelong Disability as Family Describes Devastating Impact

The life of a young girl who was stabbed by Riad Bouchaker in Dublin, along with the lives of her family members, has become “unrecognisable,” the Central Criminal Court heard on Monday during the sentencing hearing. The girl was just five years old when the attack took place on Parnell Square, leaving her with a severe, lifelong and life-limiting disability after her brain was deprived of oxygen for approximately 40 minutes.
Now eight years old, the girl cannot speak and communicates only through blinking. She uses a wheelchair and requires feeding through a tube in her stomach because she cannot swallow safely on her own. These details were presented to the court as the lasting consequences of the violent attack.
In a victim impact statement read by Detective Garda Shimna Ní Mháirtín, the girl’s mother described the profound emotional toll on the family. “In a way she died during those 40 minutes. A piece of myself and my husband and family also died that day,” she wrote, expressing the devastating impact the incident has had on their lives.
On July 1, a jury at Dublin’s Central Criminal Court unanimously convicted 52-year-old Bouchaker of attempting to murder three children in a knife attack on November 23, 2023. The victims included the five-year-old girl, who was stabbed in the heart, a five-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl. The attack also triggered widespread rioting and looting across Dublin city.
