A Sudanese national was arrested in Athens after allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman and later entering a local polyclinic armed with a knife, causing alarm among staff and patients.

The incident reportedly began at a store on Menandrou Street, where the suspect entered posing as a customer and requested service. According to the victim, he suddenly approached her in an aggressive manner. She reacted quickly by shouting for help and managing to escape, preventing the situation from escalating further. The suspect then left the premises shortly afterward.

Authorities later discovered that the man was carrying a knife during the incident, although it was not used in the alleged attack.

Shortly afterward, the same individual allegedly entered a nearby polyclinic while armed with the knife, creating panic among employees and visitors. Staff members successfully restrained him on the building’s first floor until police arrived and took him into custody.

Investigators found that the suspect was already known to law enforcement due to a history of serious criminal offenses. In 2021, he was convicted of attempted rape in Kalamata in a case with similar circumstances. Despite the conviction, he was released under restrictive conditions.

In 2024, he received a prison sentence for attempted robbery, theft, and unlawful possession of a weapon, but was released after serving only a few months. He was arrested again in 2025 on charges related to sexual misconduct.

Authorities also determined that the man was residing in Greece illegally after his asylum application had been rejected. However, he remained in the country while awaiting the outcome of an appeal against the decision.

The case has renewed public attention on concerns surrounding repeat offenders and immigration enforcement, particularly after the suspect’s previous convictions and arrests.
