India: ISIS-Inspired Tutor Attacks Hindus for Failing to Recite Islamic Declaration of Faith

An early morning knife attack in the Mira Road area near Mumbai, Maharashtra, has raised serious concerns among law enforcement agencies, prompting a detailed investigation into possible ideological motivations. The incident took place around 4:00 AM on Monday, April 27, 2026, in the Naya Nagar locality. According to preliminary reports, a man approached two security guards at an under-construction site and initiated a conversation that quickly turned hostile.

Police identified the identified as Zaib Zuber Ansari. Officials state that he first approached one of the guards asking for directions, left briefly, and then returned to question both guards about their religious identity. Investigators allege that he asked them to recite the Islamic profession of faith, and when they were unable to do so, he attacked them with a sharp weapon. The victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Ramesh Sen, sustained multiple stab injuries. One managed to reach a nearby hospital on his own, while the other was assisted by a passerby. Both are currently undergoing treatment.

Law enforcement agencies acted swiftly, using CCTV footage to trace the suspect and arrest him within approximately 90 minutes of the attack. A case has been registered under charges including attempted murder and promoting enmity between groups. During the probe, officials found that the accused is a science graduate who had spent several years in the United States before returning to India around 2019. He was reportedly working as an online tutor and living alone in the Mira Road area. Investigators are examining his background, personal circumstances, and recent activities to better understand the factors leading up to the attack.

According to ATS sources, a search of his residence uncovered handwritten notes that are now part of the investigation. Authorities have also seized electronic devices, including mobile phones and computers, for forensic analysis to assess any potential exposure to online extremist content or networks. Officials are focusing on his digital footprint to determine whether he had any contact with external groups or was influenced independently through online material.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has stated that the nature of the attack suggests a possible ideological angle and emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation. Authorities are also examining whether the incident was intended to provoke communal tensions.

As of now, the accused remains in custody, and investigators are continuing to question him while expanding inquiries into his contacts, travel history, and online interactions. While no confirmed organizational links have been established so far, the case is being examined as a potential lone-actor incident.
