Indian para-swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh, 40, has returned to India after Japanese police detained him following allegations of sexual harassment and molestation involving a female hotel employee during the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan. The incident has prompted the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to recommend strict disciplinary action, including a possible lifetime ban from competitive para swimming.

Incident at a Hotel in Nagoya

The alleged incident occurred on October 19 at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Nagoya, where members of the Indian para-swimming contingent were staying during the Games. According to media reports, a female housekeeping employee entered Shaikh’s room to perform her duties and subsequently accused him of inappropriate conduct.

The employee reportedly alleged that Shaikh touched her inappropriately, made sexually suggestive gestures, attempted to grope her and made unwanted sexual advances. She left the room and reported the incident to her superiors, who informed the local organizing committee and Japanese authorities.

Japanese police subsequently took Shaikh into custody for questioning as they examined the complaint. Hotel management and officials accompanying the Indian delegation also became involved, bringing the incident to the attention of the authorities overseeing India’s participation in the international sporting event.

Return to India and Potential Disciplinary Action

According to media reports, the Indian delegation submitted a written apology to the employee while coordinating with the hotel management and Japanese authorities. Shaikh subsequently returned to India on October 20, although the circumstances of his departure do not, by themselves, establish the outcome of the allegations or any legal proceedings.

The Paralympic Committee of India has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach towards sexual misconduct and behaviour that violates the safety, dignity or rights of others. The committee is expected to examine the matter and determine the appropriate disciplinary response under the applicable regulations.

The delegation’s Chef de Mission has reportedly recommended the strictest possible punishment, including a lifetime ban from para swimming. Any final disciplinary decision will depend on the relevant proceedings and findings.

A Distinguished Sporting Career Under Scrutiny

Shaikh, who hails from Bihar and resides in Mumbai, has established a notable record in para swimming. He previously held the world No. 1 ranking in the men’s 100-metre butterfly S5 and 50-metre breaststroke SB4 categories.

At the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, he won gold medals in the 50-metre and 200-metre breaststroke events. In 2025, he added another international achievement by winning gold in the 200-metre breaststroke at the Reykjavik International Games in Iceland.

His sporting accomplishments have brought recognition to India’s para-sports community. However, the allegations in Japan have placed his professional reputation under serious scrutiny. The case also highlights the importance of ensuring that athletes representing the country uphold professional standards and respect the safety and dignity of everyone they encounter during international competitions.

Misconduct, Gender Respect and Accountability

The allegations against Shaikh raise serious concerns about appropriate conduct, personal boundaries and the protection of women in workplaces and public settings. Such allegations must be examined impartially, with the complainant’s safety and dignity respected and the accused afforded due process. If misconduct is established, the response should reflect the seriousness of the offence and the applicable rules.

Public discussions about sexual harassment sometimes extend to religious beliefs and cultural attitudes towards women. However, allegations against an individual do not establish that an entire religious community shares the same attitudes or is collectively responsible for sexual misconduct. Addressing these issues effectively requires evidence-based analysis, consistent enforcement of the law and clear standards of accountability for everyone, regardless of religion, nationality or professional standing.

Conclusion

The allegations involving Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh have cast a shadow over India's participation in the 2026 Asian Para Games and raised questions about athlete conduct during international representation. His previous achievements remain part of his sporting record, but they do not place him above the standards expected of any individual representing the country.

The appropriate course is a fair and thorough examination of the complaint, followed by proportionate action if the allegations are substantiated. Protecting women from harassment, respecting due process and enforcing consistent standards of conduct are essential to maintaining public trust in Indian sport and ensuring that international sporting achievements are accompanied by responsibility and integrity.
