John Cleese Faces Calls for Cancellation Over Controversial Comments on Islam

British comedian and actor John Cleese has faced renewed criticism and calls for his shows to be cancelled following a series of social media posts concerning Islam and Islamism. The controversy intensified after a group of Muslim activists called Deenified publicly accused the comedian of making statements that they considered hostile toward Muslims.
The campaign emerged after Deenified published a social media video accusing Cleese of “spreading dangerous misinformation and creating hostility towards Muslims.” The group described him as a “hate preacher” and argued that some of his remarks went beyond comedy and amounted to hate speech. It also called for his Birmingham performance to be cancelled.
Despite the campaign, Cleese’s Birmingham show went ahead without disruption. However, the controversy continued, with the Islamic website 5Pillars suggesting that similar campaigns could emerge in other British cities, particularly those with sizeable Muslim populations.
The issue took another turn when 5Pillars reported that Cleese had been referred to the UK government’s Prevent programme over a number of social media posts concerning Muslims and Islam. Cleese has become increasingly outspoken online about his views on Islamism and related cultural issues, arguing that he has the right to express his opinions.
Among the posts highlighted in the reported referral were comments in which Cleese criticized aspects of Islamic religious and cultural beliefs. He also expressed opposition to practices such as female genital mutilation, child marriage and violence against people described as non-believers. Another post he shared reportedly referred to Islam using highly controversial language.
According to the report, the complainant argued that Cleese’s posts collectively contributed to the dehumanization of Muslims and attributed violence and criminality broadly to the Muslim population. The reported assessment categorized the potential risk as “Moderate to High.”
The controversy has therefore developed into a wider debate over the boundaries between comedy, criticism of religion and Islamism, and allegations of anti-Muslim hostility. While activists have called for consequences over Cleese’s statements, the comedian has continued to defend his right to express his views publicly.
