Tension gripped Shiggaon town in Karnataka’s Haveri district after a 31-year-old man, identified by police as Mohammed Jaffer, was allegedly caught urinating inside the premises of an Anjaneya temple on Thursday night.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 9:30 pm. Local residents reportedly noticed the act, confronted the accused, and later handed him over to the police. Jaffer was subsequently arrested, and a case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Reports indicate that the incident sparked outrage among local Hindu residents and several Hindu organizations, who held protests demanding strict legal action against the accused. In response, police deployed additional personnel around the temple and nearby areas to maintain law and order, while appealing to the public to remain peaceful and avoid any escalation.

During the preliminary investigation, police stated that Jaffer had allegedly been sleeping within the temple premises before the incident. Officials are continuing their inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding his presence at the temple and whether there was any specific motive behind the act. As of now, the police have not publicly confirmed a motive.

The alleged desecration of a place of worship has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of devotees and has renewed calls for stronger protection of temples and other religious sites. Many local residents have demanded that such offenses be dealt with firmly under the law to ensure accountability and to safeguard the sanctity of religious institutions.
