A routine dispute between neighbours over garbage turned into a shocking act of violence on the morning of 15 August in Maharashtra's Kupwad area of Sangli district, leaving a 35-year-old woman dead and her husband critically injured.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. in Vighnaharta Colony near Chanakya Chowk, where Manisha Mohan Kesarekar was preparing to heat water on a wood-fired stove outside her home. According to police, her neighbour, Farid Abdul Sheikh (52), allegedly dumped garbage on the road behind the house. When Manisha objected, an argument broke out between the two.
Her husband, Mohan Nagappa Kesarekar (45), intervened in an attempt to calm the situation, but Sheikh allegedly slapped him. As Manisha confronted him over the assault, the confrontation escalated into violence.
Police said Sheikh went inside his house, returned with a hammer and a knife, and launched a brutal attack. He allegedly struck Mohan on the head with the hammer, causing serious injuries, before repeatedly stabbing Manisha in the head and abdomen. She succumbed to her injuries, while Mohan was rushed to hospital for treatment. Sheikh fled the scene on a bicycle immediately after the attack.
The Sangli Local Crime Branch launched a search operation and traced the accused to Wanlesswadi. He was detained within two hours of the incident. During questioning, police said Sheikh admitted to the crime before being handed over to Kupwad Police, which is continuing the investigation.
A video shared on X by user Treeni features the couple's young child describing the family's ordeal. The child alleged that Sheikh had often claimed the family should not live in the neighbourhood, saying it was "his area." She further stated that the harassment began soon after they moved there and claimed he would frequently throw stones at their house to intimidate them.
