Muslim Candidate Melissa Chaudhry Faces Criticism Over LGBTQ Position and Israel Remarks

Melissa Chaudhry, a Muslim candidate who wears a headscarf, is running as a Democrat against longtime Congressman Adam Smith (D-Wash.), arguing that his strong support for Israel is one of the main reasons she decided to challenge him. She accused Smith of accepting campaign contributions from AIPAC, Boeing, and Raytheon, claiming that his largest financial backers are the Israel lobby and the defense industry.

Although Chaudhry has publicly stated that she supports LGBTQ rights, she has come under criticism from members of the Washington State Democratic Party after it emerged that her campaign website did not mention this position. Chaudhry later explained that she deliberately omitted it because she feared it would alienate some Muslim voters, saying that "a lot of Muslims do not feel that way, unfortunately."

Jonathan Choe, a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, criticized Chaudhry's explanation, arguing that it reflects political opportunism. He claimed that she was presenting different positions to different audiences in an effort to win votes and questioned the sincerity of her stated support for the LGBTQ community.

When asked by JNS whether she believes Islam supports gay people or gay rights, Chaudhry did not directly answer the question. Instead, she said she had been "forced into a corner" by what she described as an aggressive and dishonest political opponent, as well as an interview panel that she believed had unfairly followed that line of questioning.
