MAIDUGURI, April 28 (Reuters) – Suspected Islamist militants killed at least 22 people and injured several more in two separate attacks over the weekend in northeastern Nigeria, according to residents and police. These incidents are the latest in a region plagued by persistent armed violence.
Nigeria has been struggling with an ongoing insurgency in its northeastern region, primarily led by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province.
In Borno state, suspected militants ambushed and killed 10 civilians and two security personnel on Saturday, reported Mohammed Shehu Timta, the emir of Gwoza. Two others were injured in the attack.
In neighboring Adamawa state, suspected Boko Haram militants killed 10 people and wounded several others in an attack on Kopre village on the same day, according to local residents. The attack targeted hunters and members of the civilian joint task force (CJTF), and Adamawa police have since deployed additional officers to Kopre, located in Hong district, said police spokesperson Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje on Monday.
