Rewa Police Arrest Man After Six Women Allege Stalking, Harassment and Pressure to Convert
Six women working for private companies in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, have complained to Amahiya police against a man identified as Saif Pathan, alleging repeated stalking, harassment and pressure to marry and convert to Islam. The complaints prompted police action, and a September 26 report said Pathan was arrested and sent to jail after being produced before a court.
The women reportedly work at different companies in the Samdariya area, while Pathan’s office is situated near their workplaces. According to their complaints, he repeatedly followed and approached them despite being asked to stop. They alleged that the unwanted behaviour extended to areas around their offices, including the parking area, lift, basement and washroom.
One of the complainants alleged that Pathan repeatedly made inappropriate remarks and pressured the women to accompany him, marry him and change their religion. She reportedly told media that he promised to keep her “like a queen” if she accepted his demands. The allegations, however, remain matters for the police investigation and judicial process to establish.
The situation allegedly escalated on September 15, when Pathan entered one of the women’s offices while she was working. According to her complaint, he damaged property, made inappropriate or abusive remarks and again pressured her to marry him and convert. She also alleged that he had been following her for around 15 to 20 days before the incident.
After the alleged behaviour continued, the women approached Amahiya police seeking protection and action. Initial reports said police were examining the complaint. Subsequent reporting on September 26 stated that a case had been registered following the complaints, Pathan was arrested and he was sent to jail after being presented before the court. The official Rewa Police website also lists Manoj Gautam as the officer at Amahiya police station.
The allegations have raised concerns about workplace safety and the ability of women to carry out their professional lives without unwanted interference. Stalking, intimidation, harassment and coercive attempts to influence someone's personal or religious choices are matters that require timely investigation irrespective of the identities or religions of those involved.
The reported case also highlights the importance of ensuring that women can travel to work, use common workplace facilities and leave their workplaces without fear of harassment. Employers and law-enforcement authorities have an important role in responding promptly to complaints and ensuring that allegations are properly investigated.
The central issue now is the legal process. While the complainants have made serious allegations and police have taken action against the accused, the claims must ultimately be established through investigation and court proceedings. Strong, religion-neutral enforcement of laws against stalking, harassment, intimidation, property damage and coercion can help protect women's safety and ensure that their freedom to work and make personal choices is respected.
