A man identified as Timir Ahmed Mohamed, who has been reported as being of Somali origin, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after allegedly driving a car into five people in London, including two women. Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police stated that, while investigators are keeping an open mind regarding the motive, the case is not currently being treated as an act of terrorism.
The police said the investigation remains ongoing and that authorities have not found sufficient evidence at this stage to classify the incident as terrorism. Timir Ahmed Mohamed is expected to face five charges of attempted murder.
The decision has drawn criticism from some commentators, who argue that European authorities are often reluctant to classify attacks involving Muslim suspects as acts of Islamic terrorism. Critics point to previous incidents in which terrorism was initially ruled out or not pursued despite allegations of extremist motives.
Among the cases cited is a May incident in Italy involving Salim El-Koudri, a Moroccan national accused of driving into a crowd. Some commentators have argued that authorities failed to treat the attack as Islamic terrorism despite reports that the suspect had previously expressed hostility toward Christians and Italy. Another example frequently referenced is a car-ramming attack in Israel a month ago, in which two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, were seriously injured.
Those raising concerns argue that these incidents reflect a broader pattern in the way certain attacks are classified and investigated, while authorities maintain that each case is assessed individually based on the available evidence.
