Sudanese Man Arrested After Entering Athens Metro Tunnel and Resisting Police

Authorities in Athens responded to a high-risk incident on the afternoon of Friday, July 24, after a Sudanese man reportedly climbed onto the Metro tracks at Agia Paraskevi Station and began walking through the tunnel toward Chalandri Station. His presence on the railway tracks triggered an immediate emergency response, as it posed a serious threat to both his own safety and the secure operation of the Metro line.

According to reports by Protothema, the Emergency Response Center received an alert at approximately 3:25 p.m., informing officials that a foreign national had left the station platform and was walking along the railway tracks toward Chalandri. Police officers from the Northeast Attica Zeus patrol unit, who were on routine duty in the Chalandri area, were immediately dispatched to the location.

The officers arrived at Chalandri Station at around 3:35 p.m. and were informed by the stationmaster that the individual was nearly 200 meters inside the tunnel, heading in the direction of Doukissis Plakentias. Recognizing the significant danger posed by the situation, the officers entered the tunnel and advanced toward the man despite the risks associated with the railway infrastructure and high-voltage electrical systems.

After locating the individual inside the tunnel, police instructed him to leave the tracks. However, he allegedly ignored repeated commands and refused to comply. When officers attempted to detain him, he reportedly resisted forcefully by pushing them and trying to flee, escalating the confrontation in the confined and hazardous environment.

During the struggle, the man allegedly shouted phrases including "Allahu Akbar" and "Ramazan Bayram", along with other words that officers said they could not understand. Police reported that he also kicked, spat at, and attempted to strike them with his fists, elbows, and head while resisting arrest.

Despite the difficult circumstances and the danger posed by the live electrical infrastructure inside the Metro tunnel, officers ultimately succeeded in restraining and handcuffing the man. He was taken into custody without any reported fatalities, bringing the dangerous incident to an end.
