On Tuesday afternoon, Donald Trump posted on TruthSocial: “Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands with India in the fight against terrorism. We pray for the souls of those lost and for the swift recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi and the amazing people of India have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!”

Trump was referring to a jihadist attack in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has long been a hotspot for jihadist activity. According to the Associated Press, "assailants indiscriminately opened fire at tourists visiting a scenic spot in Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said. Police described it as a ‘terror attack’ carried out by militants opposed to Indian rule near the resort town of Pahalgam." However, this report, like most mainstream media coverage of jihadist violence, was vague to the point of being misleading about the true identity of the attackers.

A Wednesday report from the Times of India provided more detail. It revealed that “the three terrorists suspected of carrying out the deadly Pahalgam attack used code names—Moosa, Yunus, and Asif—to conceal their identities during the operation that killed 28 people, mostly tourists.” These individuals were identified as Asif Shaikh, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha, all believed to be operatives of The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), an Islamic militant organization.

The Times of India further noted a chilling detail: “Survivors recalled that the attackers, dressed in Indian Army uniforms, demanded that victims reveal their religion and recite Islamic verses before opening fire.” The jihadis were targeting non-Muslims, in line with the Qur'an's command to “kill the idolaters wherever you find them” (9:5). Hindus are considered idolaters in Islam, which explains the attackers' focus on killing them while ensuring not to harm any Muslims.

Firstpost shared more grim specifics: “After initial indiscriminate firing, the terrorists singled out non-Muslims to kill them. A woman at the scene recalled that a terrorist shot her husband upon learning he was not a Muslim. ‘We were having bhelpuri when they shot my husband. One man came and said he was perhaps not a Muslim, and they shot him,’ the woman said in Hindi.”

The attackers also “checked for circumcision and asked people to recite the ‘kalma,’ the Islamic declaration of faith, to identify non-Muslims. Those unable to recite it were considered non-Muslims and shot.” Muslims practice circumcision, while Hindus do not.
