A shocking incident of religiously motivated violence has emerged from eastern Uganda, where a 45-year-old mother of six was severely injured by her husband after he discovered her conversion to Christianity. The attack took place on March 11 in Bugiri town, leaving the victim, Hajati Kyakuwa Kamiyati, hospitalized with critical injuries at Bugiri Joint Clinic.

Kamiyati, who had performed the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca the previous year, embraced Christianity just two months after her return. Determined to grow in her new faith, she began regularly attending Bible study sessions under the guidance of her pastor, Rebecca Nakiranda. Speaking from her hospital bed, Kamiyati shared that she had been encouraged to attend church consistently to learn how to live as a new believer.

Her husband, Mukiibi Rajabu, a long-distance truck driver frequently traveling across regions including Mombasa, Kigali, South Sudan, and various parts of Uganda, was reportedly unaware of her conversion initially. Kamiyati believes he learned about it through an acquaintance who had seen her attending church and informed him.

On the day of the incident, Kamiyati was attending a Bible study session at Christ the King Church. When her husband called to ask about her location, she told him she was at the market. Although he initially responded calmly, saying he would return home in two days, the situation escalated rapidly.

Within half an hour, Rajabu reportedly arrived at the church armed with a stick and a knife. According to witnesses and church leaders, he stormed into the gathering while worshippers were singing and distributing Bibles, and launched a violent attack directly on his wife. She sustained multiple injuries, including a deep facial wound, a fractured hand, and a suspected spinal injury, before collapsing unconscious.

The sudden assault caused panic among the worshippers, many of whom fled the scene in fear. Attempts to contact local authorities were reportedly unsuccessful at the time, allowing the attacker to escape.

Kamiyati continues to receive medical treatment as the incident raises serious concerns about religious intolerance and the safety of converts in certain regions.
