The mayor of Bath, Bharat Pankhania, resigned from his honorary position following widespread criticism over controversial social media activity linked to an arson attack in London. The incident involved the burning of ambulances belonging to Hatzola in the Jewish neighborhood of Golders Green on March 23, which authorities classified as an antisemitic act.

In the days following the attack, Pankhania shared and interacted with posts on X (formerly Twitter) that suggested the incident was a “false flag” operation carried out by members of the Jewish community for sympathy or financial gain. These claims drew sharp backlash from the public and political circles alike. A “false flag” refers to an operation designed to deceive by making it appear as though another group is responsible.

Responding to the outrage, Pankhania issued a public apology, acknowledging that his actions did not reflect his values and expressing regret for the harm caused. He stated that he had deleted the posts and offered an unreserved apology. Subsequently, the Liberal Democrats suspended him pending an investigation. Shortly thereafter, he stepped down both from his mayoral role and the party.

In its statement, the Liberal Democrats emphasized their firm stance against discrimination and antisemitism, noting that Pankhania had taken personal responsibility for his actions. His resignation effectively brings an abrupt end to his emerging political ambitions.

The episode has sparked broader debate, particularly when compared to similar controversies elsewhere. In Richmond, California, Mayor Eduardo Martinez faced criticism for making comparable “false flag” claims regarding a deadly attack during a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach in December 2025. Despite the severity of the incident—which resulted in multiple fatalities—Martinez issued an apology but did not resign and continues to hold office.

The contrasting outcomes in these cases have intensified discussions around accountability in public office, particularly in relation to sensitive issues such as antisemitism and misinformation.
