More than 200 protesters gathered at the Boston Public Garden last Wednesday for a rally where speakers from the local Muslim organization, the Muslim Justice League (MJL), invoked martyrdom to validate the recent suicide of a troubled leftist who self-immolated outside the Israeli consulate in Boston. The MJL also justified a recent attack on a pro-Israel protester in Newton, who managed to defend himself, framing the assault as a warranted reaction to public support for Israel. Additionally, MJL speakers depicted Marcellus Williams, a Missouri man executed the previous day for the murder of a social worker, as a victim of "state murder."

According to the MJL’s website, the organization’s mission is to "organize and advocate for communities whose rights are threatened under the national security state in the United States. Led by Muslims, our organizing brings justice for ALL communities deemed ‘suspect.’" The group appears to blur the lines between Islamism and leftist ideologies.

"There is nothing this country hates more than justice," said Fatema Ahmad, the executive director of the Muslim Justice League.

Founded in 2014 by four Muslim women in Boston in response to the need for local Muslim-led defense against the "War on Terror," the MJL has received support from various foundations, including the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, the Hyams Foundation, the Episcopal City Foundation, and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

MJL organizers and attendees at the September 25 event attempted to prevent this reporter from recording the rally, an occurrence that is becoming increasingly common at such protests. This trend raises concerns about press freedom, particularly as the presidential election in November approaches.
