An Afghan migrant accused of murdering a British woman in Athens allegedly sent messages to her family and friends claiming he was a jihadist who killed her because she was a Christian. Greek authorities allege that 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai used the victim’s phone to send the messages before switching the device off. He is also accused of purchasing a burner phone and continuing to send similar messages to the woman’s contacts, including his American wife, according to local media reports.

The victim, 38-year-old Elisabeth-Jane Ross, was found dead inside a suitcase in Athens just days ago. Ahmadzai, who arrived in Greece by boat in 2016 and is also known as a professional boxer, is scheduled to appear before a court in Athens. During police questioning, he reportedly denied responsibility for Ross’s death, claiming he had discovered her dead in the bathroom of an apartment.

Ahmadzai married American citizen Alaina Hall in 2023 after the two met at a refugee centre in Athens. Following their marriage, the couple founded a pro-migrant non-governmental organization called Love Every Nation Athens and have one child together, despite reported opposition from Hall’s family.

The NGO’s website contains a personal account attributed to Ahmadzai, stating that his father, described as a military commander in Kabul, survived six assassination attempts before allegedly being killed by the Taliban when Ahmadzai was four years old. The same account further claims that his older brother was later kidnapped by the Taliban and that his mother, brother, and sister were killed in a suicide car bombing.

However, these claims regarding Ahmadzai’s family background originate solely from his own account published on the organization’s website and have not been independently verified.
