The exploitation of underage girls in prostitution has emerged as a growing concern in France, with recent accounts suggesting that victims are not limited to children from disadvantaged or broken families. The book Lost Hearts sheds light on this disturbing issue through the experiences of teenagers from the city of Angoulême in the Charente region, illustrating how young girls became trapped in networks of sexual exploitation.

One of the cases described is that of a 15-year-old girl identified by the pseudonym Léa. According to the book, she was allegedly forced into 10 to 12 sexual encounters each day while being kept under the influence of cocaine. Her mother described the ordeal as devastating, claiming that her daughter became completely controlled by those exploiting her and was manipulated through drugs. French newspaper Charente Libre also reported that Léa lived in constant fear and was frequently threatened with violence, including having a weapon held to her head.

The book further explains that many victims came from stable, middle-class families with no prior history of abuse or neglect. Maya and Léa, whose names have been changed to protect their identities, were described as ordinary teenagers. Maya's mother recalled her as "a teenager like all teenagers," while Léa was known for her commitment to academics and sports before becoming entangled in exploitation.

According to the accounts presented in the book, the girls were allegedly subjected to sexual abuse, introduced to hard drugs, and coerced through explicit images and threats of public exposure. These methods reportedly enabled their exploiters to maintain control over them and force them into prostitution.

French authorities have reported a significant increase in child prostitution cases, with official figures indicating a 43 percent rise over the past four years. Law enforcement agencies have also warned that victims are becoming increasingly younger, underscoring the growing urgency of addressing child trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Investigations into these crimes have identified individuals from a variety of backgrounds, and authorities continue to pursue those responsible through criminal investigations. Experts emphasize that combating child sexual exploitation requires stronger law enforcement, better victim support services, greater public awareness, and coordinated efforts to dismantle trafficking networks while ensuring that responsibility is assigned to those directly involved in these crimes rather than to any broader community.
