KABUL: Taliban authorities have arrested 14 individuals in northern Afghanistan for engaging in musical performances and singing, activities they have restricted since assuming control, provincial police reported on Saturday.

Since taking power in 2021, the Taliban government has gradually implemented laws reflecting their strict interpretation of Islamic law.

One such measure has involved cracking down on music in public spaces, including live performances, playing at gatherings, in restaurants, in cars, and on radio or television broadcasts.

According to a police statement, on Thursday evening, 14 people gathered at a residential house in the capital of Takhar province, taking advantage of the night to play musical instruments and sing, which disturbed the public.

Following their takeover, Taliban authorities have closed music schools and destroyed or burned musical instruments and sound systems, claiming that music promotes "moral corruption" and causes public disturbances.
