A 23-year-old female student was sexually assaulted in the early hours of Sunday morning shortly after exiting the Jonio metro station in northern Rome, triggering a police investigation and a manhunt for the suspected attackers.

According to preliminary findings, the young woman had left the station and was walking toward a nearby night bus stop when she was confronted by three men. Investigators say the men forcibly restrained her and dragged her to a less visible area near Via di Valle Melaina, a short distance from the metro exit.

The victim later told authorities that one of the men raped her while the other two allegedly held her down, as reported by La Repubblica. After the assault, the three suspects fled the scene on foot.

Despite being in shock, the woman managed to reach a parked car nearby and sought help from the driver. She was immediately taken to Sandro Pertini Hospital, where medical staff confirmed signs consistent with sexual assault and promptly notified law enforcement.

Police are now working to reconstruct the sequence of events, including the victim’s movements before and after leaving the metro station. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the metro area and nearby streets to determine whether the suspects followed her from the station or encountered her along the route.

According to Il Giornale, authorities are searching for three Gambian nationals in connection with the attack, though officials have emphasized that the identities of the suspects have not yet been formally confirmed. The assault reportedly took place approximately 350 meters from the Jonio station exit.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to analyze CCTV footage and gather witness statements in an effort to identify and apprehend those responsible.
