KABUL: Taliban officials have detained 14 individuals in northern Afghanistan for playing musical instruments and singing, activities banned by the group since they came to power, provincial police reported on Saturday.
Since taking control in 2021, the Taliban government has increasingly enforced laws aligned with their strict interpretation of Islamic law.
Among these measures is a crackdown on public music, prohibiting live performances, playing music at social gatherings, in restaurants, inside vehicles, and broadcasting on radio or television.
According to a police statement, on Thursday night in the capital of northern Takhar province, “fourteen people gathered at a private residence under the cover of night where they were playing musical instruments and singing, disturbing the public peace.”
Following their takeover, Taliban authorities closed music schools and destroyed musical instruments and sound equipment, asserting that music promotes “moral corruption” and causes public disturbance.
