An Arizona teenager, identified as 17-year-old Marvin Aneer Jalo from Peoria, was taken into custody for allegedly planning an ISIS-inspired attack on the Phoenix Pride parade using an explosive-equipped, remote-controlled drone.

Jalo’s arrest took place on Oct. 18, during the initial events of Phoenix's LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations, which were set to culminate with the annual parade on Sunday, Oct. 20. He faces adult charges, including terrorism and conspiracy to commit terrorism, both classified as class 2 felonies.

Authorities report that Jalo began engaging with extremist individuals in online chat rooms in 2023, claiming these individuals were actively recruiting him. At one point, he reportedly posted a message suggesting an attack on the 2024 Pride Parade, declaring intentions to “bomb” it and “take over the USA.” He also mentioned receiving supplies to create explosives.

A search of Jalo’s phone found multiple firearm images and a tutorial video featuring an ISIS fighter demonstrating the creation of the explosive TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide). Investigators stated that Jalo ordered TATP-making chemicals via Amazon and intended to create a “bomb drone” using a remote-controlled device.

The criminal complaint also indicated that Jalo had searched online for information about the 2024 Phoenix Pride events, including the parade.

Following Jalo’s arrest at his Peoria residence on Oct. 18, the Phoenix Pride Parade proceeded smoothly with added security from Phoenix Police, who implemented barriers along the mile-long route ending at Steele Indian School Park. The parade included notable figures such as Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, who served as grand marshal, and Former U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, who attended on behalf of the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz Campaign.

Governor Hobbs issued a statement expressing shock and gratitude for the actions taken to prevent the alleged attack. She urged Arizonans to oppose hate and reiterated her commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting the importance of unity against bigotry and violent extremism.
