A woman, who was reportedly assaulted by her own mother for refusing to marry her first cousin, has been told by the court that she will never be allowed to return to the family home.
According to reports presented in court, Enam Hmeed, 45, and her husband Mohamed Al-Fadhli were arrested in April following a disturbing incident in western New South Wales. Police allege that they found their 21-year-old daughter, Rhonda, inside their family-run convenience store with a metal chain padlocked around her neck.
Authorities claim that both Hmeed and Al-Fadhli physically assaulted Rhonda on separate occasions after discovering that she had maintained contact with her boyfriend. The young man had previously approached Rhonda’s parents seeking permission to marry her—a request that was reportedly rejected by her father. The refusal was allegedly rooted in his desire for Rhonda to enter into an arranged marriage with his brother’s son, making the prospective groom her first cousin.
The situation escalated when Rhonda was found speaking on the phone with her boyfriend. According to police allegations, Hmeed forcibly grabbed her daughter by the hair and repeatedly slammed her head against a concrete wall. She is also accused of biting Rhonda and striking her with a garden hose during the attack.
In a further disturbing development, Mohamed Al-Fadhli is alleged to have traveled nearly 400 kilometers from Sydney Airport back to the family’s shop in Dubbo after his wife informed him about the secret phone call, contributing to the series of alleged assaults.
