An internal investigation by NSW police has determined that off-duty officers who allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar boom” and “Hezbollah” at a Christmas party, following a verbal argument with a Muslim neighbor, were merely engaging in “banter between friends.”

The incident reportedly occurred on December 13 at Glenmore Park in western Sydney, after the neighbor raised concerns about water from the officers’ swimming pool leaking onto his property.

CCTV footage reviewed by Guardian Australia shows partygoers shouting “Allahu Akbar” and “Allahu Akbar boom.” Over an hour later, several voices can be heard chanting “Allahu Akbar” in unison, followed by laughter and a call of “Hezbollah.”

The man filed a formal complaint to NSW police on January 15, according to documents seen by Guardian Australia. He later gave a statement at Nepean police station on February 2.

In his statement, he explained that he had asked the party guests to be considerate of the flooding situation, but they responded by racially insulting him and his family for being Muslim.

A police inspector handling the complaint sent an email with his findings to the man on February 28.

The inspector reassured the man, stating, “The chanting you heard was not directed at you in any way. I can understand how you might have interpreted it that way.”

However, the man told Guardian Australia that the shouting left him and his family feeling unsafe and made him question his trust in the police.

He said, “Were they implying I’m a suicide bomber, or threatening me with a bomb?”

“If I had said what they said, they would’ve jumped over the fence and arrested me,” the man added.
