Dhaka: After being arrested for sexually harassing a Bangladeshi university student, Asif Sardar Arnab was promptly released and welcomed by a cheering crowd that adorned him with flower garlands.
The alleged victim, a student who had passionately supported the youth-led uprising that ousted the autocratic government in the Muslim-majority nation last year, now faces a different reality.
After enduring a flood of violent threats from religious extremists emboldened by the political unrest, she now questions whether her involvement in the movement was the right decision.
“A perpetrator was freed by a mob,” she expressed in a social media post.
“You can’t imagine the number of rape and death threats I’ve received,” added the woman, who cannot be named under Bangladeshi laws that protect sexual harassment complainants from retaliation.
“We made a mistake by joining the movement. So many lives were sacrificed in vain.”
