A tragic incident unfolded on Monday morning in the Dalori Gari community, located about 12 kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, when suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly attack on farmers under security escort.
According to local sources and security officials, the assailants, who were armed and reportedly arrived on motorcycles before advancing on foot, ambushed the farmers as they made their way to the fields under the protection of a joint security team. The escort comprised a soldier, a mobile police officer, and two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). All four were killed during the assault after the terrorists opened heavy gunfire without warning.
Witnesses revealed that the attackers not only targeted the security operatives but also turned on the farmers. An unconfirmed number of civilians, including women and young girls, were abducted in the chaos. Some farmers sustained injuries while attempting to flee the gunfire, which made them vulnerable to being captured by the insurgents.
While the military and police authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the number of casualties or those abducted, community members fear the toll could rise. The attack has once again highlighted the persistent insecurity in Borno State, despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the region.
Dalori Gari and surrounding communities have long been vulnerable to terrorist activities due to their proximity to Maiduguri and farmlands that often attract insurgent groups. Monday’s attack underscores the continuing challenge faced by farmers who rely on security escorts for survival, as venturing into fields without protection has become increasingly life-threatening.
