In one of the deadliest assaults in recent months, not fewer than 61 people were reportedly killed on Friday night when Boko Haram terrorists launched a coordinated attack in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State. The victims included both civilians and Nigerian soldiers, underscoring the intensity and scale of the assault.
According to multiple sources, the terrorists struck around 9 p.m. in Darul Jamal, a village near Banki town, and continued their operation throughout the night until daybreak. The attack was described as highly organized, with militants carrying out simultaneous raids that overwhelmed both residents and security personnel.
Darul Jamal, a community where displaced persons had been resettled earlier this year, became the epicenter of horror. Locals recounted how the insurgents stormed the area, indiscriminately targeting unsuspecting villagers and travelers who were passing through at the time. Many of the victims were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had been relocated to the Government Science Secondary School IDP Camp in Bama.
Eyewitnesses revealed that at least 56 civilians lost their lives, alongside five Nigerian troops who attempted to resist the attackers. However, residents believe the actual death toll may be much higher, as several people remain missing in the aftermath of the bloodshed.
In addition to the human casualties, the terrorists set ablaze more than 20 houses and at least 10 buses, leaving behind scenes of devastation and despair. Survivors described the attack as a massacre, with families torn apart and entire households wiped out overnight.
The attack has once again highlighted the precarious security situation in Borno State and the persistent threat Boko Haram continues to pose despite ongoing military operations in the region.
