A Northampton man has been charged following an alleged attempt to set fire to a mosque in Kettering. The accused, identified as Arif Ali Rafiq, a British-born Asian resident of Harlestone Road, Northampton, is scheduled to appear in court today to face charges of attempted arson with intent to endanger life.
According to a spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police, the charges stem from an incident that occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, October 5, when an individual allegedly tried to ignite the front door of the mosque in Headlands, Kettering. Authorities responded swiftly after reports of the attempted attack surfaced, and a subsequent investigation led to Rafiq’s arrest and formal charge.
Police officials have emphasized the seriousness of the offence, noting that attempting to set fire to a place of worship constitutes a grave threat not only to life and property but also to the peace and cohesion of the local community. The motive behind the alleged act has not yet been disclosed, and further details are expected to emerge as the court proceedings begin.
Local community leaders and residents have expressed concern over the incident, describing it as “deeply troubling” and calling for unity and calm while the investigation continues.
Rafiq remains in custody and will appear before magistrates later today as the judicial process moves forward.
