Paderborn (North Rhine-Westphalia) – A shocking and violent incident has once again drawn attention to the threat of Islamist radicalization among minors in Germany. On Saturday afternoon, a 13-year-old girl allegedly attacked and severely injured a young nurse inside a psychiatric clinic in Paderborn.

According to police reports, the assault took place around 11:50 a.m. in the clinic’s kitchen during a cooking session. The teenager is accused of using a sharp object to stab a 24-year-old caregiver, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. The victim received immediate medical attention at the scene before being rushed to a hospital for further treatment. Authorities have since established a homicide squad to investigate the case.

Too Young for Prison, Yet Highly Dangerous

One of the most troubling aspects of the case is the age of the attacker. At just 13 years old, she falls below Germany’s minimum age of criminal responsibility. This means that legal measures such as pretrial detention or formal prosecution cannot be applied. Instead, the girl remains under police custody, raising questions about how such cases should be handled in the future.

The teenager had not been living in freedom prior to the attack. She was already being held in the psychiatric facility under a court order due to her extremist tendencies. Authorities had classified her as a “serious danger to others,” which is why she was placed under constant supervision, including monitoring by security guards around the clock.

A History of Islamist Radicalization

This was not the first time the girl had displayed violent and extremist behavior. Security services had been monitoring her closely since June, when intelligence suggested she was preparing an Islamist-motivated attack. Evidence of her extremist ideology was described by investigators as “concrete,” with specific plans to injure – and possibly kill – police officers.

Her past also included a failed escape attempt in late June, during which she reportedly tried to attack a police officer with a pane of glass. Thanks to her electronic ankle bracelet, authorities were able to quickly locate and apprehend her. Following this, she was transferred to the LWL Clinic in Paderborn, where the most recent attack occurred.

The circumstances surrounding her access to the kitchen and sharp utensils remain highly controversial. Critics are questioning why someone flagged as extremely dangerous was allowed near potential weapons in the first place.

Security Measures Under Scrutiny

The police explained that surveillance within the clinic was carried out by a private security service operating under the responsibility of the clinic’s administration. Security personnel were specifically tasked with preventing escape attempts but were evidently unable to prevent the brutal assault.

The case has triggered debates about how institutions handle radicalized minors, especially when they are too young to face criminal charges but pose a real danger to others.

Troubled Past and Ongoing Investigations

Reports suggest that the 13-year-old had a deeply troubled upbringing. She lost her mother at a young age and is believed to have been radicalized online. This case highlights once again how extremist groups exploit vulnerable children through internet propaganda, leading them toward dangerous ideological paths.

For now, investigators are still determining whether Saturday’s attack was politically motivated or an act of personal aggression. Authorities have stressed that the incident does not pose a broader threat to the public, but the chilling details of the case have already sparked alarm nationwide.
