Disturbing body cam footage captures the moment a New York man suddenly lunged at a police officer outside a California precinct, stabbing the officer repeatedly before being fatally shot.
The newly released video shows 28-year-old Deyaa Abdelhadi Halaibeh first assaulting a Target employee while stealing an eight-inch chef’s knife, which he later used in the attack on the officer.
Halaibeh, who had reportedly traveled from New York to California just days earlier, then made his way to the Santa Monica Police Department headquarters. He approached the call button outside the building, waiting behind two others to speak to an officer.
As the officer responded, he noticed Halaibeh keeping his right hand inside his jacket and asked, "What’s in your jacket? I’m kind of nervous with your hand in your jacket like that."
Halaibeh replied, "You’re nervous?" before suddenly pulling out the knife and lunging at the officer, the footage reveals.
The chaotic scene shows the officer attempting to flee, but Halaibeh managed to stab him several times before being shot and killed. Police released the footage from the Oct. 5 incident, describing the ordeal as a "horrific attack."
“I’m hurt — I’m stabbed,” the injured officer is heard telling colleagues who rushed to assist upon hearing the gunfire.
Santa Monica police stated that "without warning, the individual attacked the officer while pulling a knife from his clothing, slashing and stabbing him."
Investigators are now reviewing the suspect’s background, including his mental health history and potential motives for what police described as a targeted attack on law enforcement.
