York University student Somar Abuaziza wrote on Instagram, “Lived a hero and died a hero,” following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last October.
Last Tuesday, Abuaziza assumed the role of president of the York Federation of Students (YFS), representing nearly 50,000 undergraduates and managing an annual budget of almost $2 million. Her leadership has sparked concerns among students and others who question whether someone with such views is fit to lead.
Abuaziza has made numerous social media posts that appear to express support for Hamas, its leaders, and the October 7 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 Israelis and the abduction of hundreds of civilians. Following inquiries from the National Post via email, direct message, and phone, her Instagram account was set to private.
However, her profile bio remains unchanged, displaying an inverted red triangle next to her name—a symbol the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) identifies as one used by Hamas to mark enemies.
