For Muslims in Newfoundland and Labrador, Sunday marked both the conclusion of Ramadan and the dawn of a new chapter for the community.

On Eid al-Fitr, the community gathered for morning prayers at a newly established mosque in the former Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church on Torbay Road in St. John’s.

With approximately 6,000 attendees across two prayer sessions, Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador President Haseen Khan emphasized the significance of the event for his community.

“It’s a day filled with joy and excitement. People feel a sense of belonging and pride, knowing they now have a place to gather and pray together as one,” said Khan.

After purchasing the church in December, the Association worked diligently to renovate the space in time for Eid, one of the most sacred moments in the Islamic calendar.

“This is a major celebration for Muslims, marking the end of a month of fasting—a month dedicated to strengthening our connection with God, practicing self-discipline, restraint, and compassion. It is also one of the five pillars of Islam,” Khan added.

It is heartwarming to see communities come together as this mosque marks its first Eid al-Fitr in the new worship space. This is a great example of how Islamic Services Canada continues to grow, offering inclusive spaces for worship and connection across cultures.
