Students at McGill University are set to begin a three-day strike on Wednesday, demanding the university sever its ties with weapons manufacturers linked to Israel's military actions in Gaza.
In an email obtained by The Gazette, the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) informed students that the strike will take place from April 2 to April 4. While participation is voluntary, the SSMU urged the university to cancel classes and avoid penalizing students for their absence.
“Although the strike vote is not legally binding, the SSMU calls on McGill’s administration to respect the student body’s decision, cancel classes, and not penalize students who choose to skip,” the union wrote.
A university spokesperson responded to The Gazette, stating that classes would proceed as scheduled.
“All classes, exams, labs, and academic activities will take place as planned,” the spokesperson said.
They also emphasized, “Students are entitled to express their opinions and gather peacefully, but they must ensure that campus access is not obstructed and academic activities continue without disruption.”
The strike was approved after nearly 4,000 students — about 17% of the undergraduate population — voted. Of those, 72% supported the strike, 28% opposed it, and the rest abstained.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Montreal’s universities have become hotbeds for pro-Palestinian activism. McGill, in particular, has witnessed frequent protests, broken windows during demonstrations, and even the establishment of a pro-Palestinian camp on campus over the past year.
