A man from Toronto is facing the rare charge of advocating genocide, along with more than two dozen other offenses allegedly driven by hatred towards the Jewish community, according to police.

Amir Arvahi Azar, 32, was arrested on January 11 for incidents occurring between April 26, 2024, and January 3, 2025, as stated in a news release by Toronto police on Monday. Due to a publication ban, police have not disclosed further details about the alleged crimes.

Azar faces 29 charges, including willful promotion of hatred, and advocating genocide, both of which require approval from the Ministry of the Attorney General.

The charges have yet to be tested in court.

Hate crime expert Barbara Perry notes that law enforcement faces a very high threshold when considering whether to press such charges.

“These charges are usually reserved for the most severe and threatening crimes,” said Perry, the director of the Centre on Hate, Bias, and Extremism at Ontario Tech University.

“There are numerous factors that law enforcement will be considering in this case,” she added.
