OTTAWA—Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that Ottawa would impose its own tariffs if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his plan to introduce a 25% levy on imports from Canada.
"As we did eight years ago, we will respond to unfair tariffs in various ways. We're still exploring the best approaches to take," Trudeau stated during an event hosted by the local chamber of commerce in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Trudeau noted that there are indications Americans are starting to realize that imposing tariffs on Canadian goods could significantly increase costs for consumers in the United States.
Trump recently declared his intention to enforce a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico unless the two countries take stronger measures to curb the flow of migrants and illegal drugs across the border into the U.S. Following this announcement, Trudeau met with Trump at his private club in Florida to discuss trade and border issues.
