The federal government has released a new guide that critics argue labels criticism of Palestinian advocacy or extremism as "racist."
The guide also redefines both "sharia" and "jihad" as benign terms, often misunderstood by Westerners, with sharia described as a method "to establish justice and peace in society."
This guide is part of "The Canadian Guide to Understanding and Combatting Islamophobia," published last week by the Department of Canadian Heritage.
It endorses the concept of "anti-Palestinian racism," a term so broadly defined that it effectively considers any criticism of Palestinians or "their narratives" as racist.
The guide states, "Public discourse often unfairly associates Palestinian and Muslim identities with terrorism."
A specific definition from the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association is referenced, claiming it's racist to link the Palestinian cause with terrorism, describe it as "inherently antisemitic," or deny that Palestinians are "an Indigenous people."
This definition is so wide that even acknowledging Israel's existence could fall under it. It refers to the Jewish state as "occupied and historic Palestine," calling its creation "the Nakba" (catastrophe), and "denying the Nakba" is highlighted as a key indicator of "anti-Palestinian racism."
