A Turbulent Week for Lyon’s Medical Students

Medical students in Lyon have faced an exceptionally distressing week. Following Monday’s abrupt cancellation of the first national EDN (Épreuves Déterminantes Nationales) exam, yet another disruption struck the Lyon Est Faculty on Thursday, October 23rd. What was meant to be a rigorous, quiet testing session quickly descended into confusion and panic after an unexpected broadcast echoed through the university halls.

“It Was Completely Surreal”

“At the end of the exam, a completely surreal incident occurred while I was still writing,” recalled Marie, a sixth-year medical student at Lyon Est. “While several of us were completing our part-time program tests, someone suddenly took over the microphone in the main lecture hall and began broadcasting shouts, insults, and religious prayers for about five minutes.”

The problem was compounded by the fact that the microphone in the main hall—normally locked and unused during examinations—was connected to the speaker systems across all lecture rooms. As a result, every student sitting for the exam was forced to endure the same unexpected outburst.

Panic and Confusion Spread Across Exam Rooms

Marie described the situation as deeply unsettling. “I didn’t understand what was being said—it wasn’t in French. A friend who understands Arabic told us they were prayers. The only words I recognized were ‘Allahu Akbar,’ repeated several times,” she told LyonMag. “People were terrified. Many thought something dangerous was happening, like an attack.”

According to witnesses, university officials later confirmed that “unauthorized individuals” had managed to enter the premises and gain access to the main lecture hall, from where the broadcast originated.

No Extra Time or Compensation

Despite the emotional distress and confusion, students claim the university took no meaningful corrective measures. “In another room, the invigilators told us not to worry and that we’d get five extra minutes at the end,” said Marie. “But that wasn’t true. The tests are timed online, so once the time runs out, the system automatically disconnects. We lost valuable minutes and couldn’t make up for it.”

Students estimate they were unable to complete four to six questions out of thirty—a potentially decisive difference in a high-stakes national exam. “We immediately went to the dean’s office to explain how unfair this was. On Monday, the test was canceled for fairness reasons, and now, after something even more serious, we’re told everything is fine,” she added in frustration.

Officials Downplay the Impact

Witnesses reported that faculty members and representatives from the Centre National de Gestion (CNG), which oversees the EDN exams, held an hour-long meeting following the incident. Their conclusion, however, offered little comfort: “They told us the disruption wasn’t long enough to affect results significantly, so there would be no compensation or cancellation,” Marie recounted.

Students Question Campus Security

Beyond their academic concerns, many students voiced alarm over the ease with which the intruders accessed the campus. “What we realized is that anyone can just walk into the faculty and cause chaos. No specific security plan was implemented afterward,” one student noted.

Several students have since submitted collective reports to the administration, detailing the disruption and its impact. Initially, the faculty rejected these reports, citing late submission, but they were eventually forwarded to the CNG. Since then, students claim they have received no response or reassurance.

A Bitter End to a Disrupted Exam Week

The ordeal has left many aspiring doctors demoralized. “For an exam that’s supposed to be fair, secure, and stress-free, none of those principles were respected,” Marie concluded. The students now await an official response from Lyon 1 University, which has yet to issue a public statement regarding the incident.
