CHICAGO — Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, the man accused of targeting a Jewish man, Chicago Police Officers, and paramedics during a shooting spree in West Rogers Park five weeks ago, was found dead in his cell at the Cook County jail on Saturday. Authorities believe his death was a suicide by hanging.

An autopsy was performed on Sunday, but the results are still pending, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Sheriff’s office staff conducting routine security checks at Cermak discovered Abdallahi unresponsive in his cell around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with signs of an apparent suicide attempt by hanging. Emergency life-saving measures were immediately initiated, and Abdallahi was transported by Chicago Fire Department ambulance to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff's spokesperson stated that there was "no evidence of foul play at this time."

When charges were first announced, prosecutors revealed that Abdallahi’s phone data indicated he spent days selecting his targets, including a synagogue near where he shot a 39-year-old Jewish man walking to the synagogue. After shooting the man in the 2600 block of West Farwell, Abdallahi allegedly drove a short distance before returning to the area 20 minutes later and opening fire on police and paramedics.

Initially, Abdallahi was not charged with a hate crime, but prosecutors later added those charges after investigators reportedly found searches on his phone for gun stores, firing ranges, synagogues, and Jewish community centers in the days leading up to the shooting.

Officials noted that Abdallahi, originally from Mauritania, had encountered U.S. Border Patrol agents in San Ysidro, California, in March 2023.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force has been asked to independently investigate his death, according to the sheriff’s office.
