If the United States deploys a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in Israel, it could escalate the regional crisis and ongoing conflicts by further disrupting the balance of power, analysts warned on Sunday.
Reports suggest that Washington is contemplating this deployment to safeguard Israel, as the US ally's aggressive military operations have prompted retaliations from Iran and other armed groups in the Middle East.
A US official told The Times of Israel that President Joe Biden's administration is considering transferring the THAAD systems to Israel, though no final decision has been made, according to Israeli media reports on Sunday.
Earlier, several Israeli sources claimed the US plans to deploy the anti-ballistic missile system in Israel, potentially sending American troops to operate it, as part of preparations for an "expected Israeli response to Iran’s recent missile attack."
By targeting Iran and other anti-Israel forces in the region, Israel is intentionally creating a perilous security environment and amassing adversaries. This strategy forces the US to allocate more resources for Israel's defense, while securing additional support from Washington. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains confident that the US will offer unconditional protection, which emboldens Israel’s aggressive actions, analysts noted.
