Coordinated Nighttime Attacks Devastate Two Christian Villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

In the dead of night on May 17, two predominantly Christian villages in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were violently shaken by a series of brutal, coordinated attacks that resulted in the tragic loss of dozens of lives and left many more severely injured.
The violent assaults were orchestrated and executed by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a notorious rebel group known for its ruthless tactics and long history of terror in the region. The two targeted communities were Kekele, located in the Ituri province, and Kokola, near the city of Beni in North Kivu province. The militants first launched their assault on Kekele.
Local administrative official Njiamoja Sabiti reported, “At least six civilians lost their lives during the overnight raid carried out by suspected ADF fighters. Among the victims were four men and two women, who suffered fatal injuries inflicted by both edged weapons and gunfire.”
Just hours after the attack on Kekele, the ADF militants moved swiftly to Kokola village, unleashing further violence. According to eyewitness Bravo Muhindo, “The assailants killed seven people and wounded four others in the attack. In addition to the loss of life and injuries, they set fire to four homes, causing widespread panic and destruction throughout the village.”
The Allied Democratic Forces have long been responsible for numerous deadly massacres across eastern Congo. Their reign of terror is marked by merciless killings of innocent worshippers, the destruction of churches, and an ongoing campaign of intimidation and violence aimed at Christian communities and other civilians in the area.
This latest wave of attacks underscores the persistent insecurity faced by residents of eastern DRC and the urgent need for concerted efforts to restore peace and protect vulnerable populations from such atrocities.
