At least 24 people were killed and more than 70 injured after a suicide bomber attacked a train carrying military personnel and their families in Quetta, according to Pakistani officials. The devastating explosion occurred as the shuttle service was passing through a residential area of the city, turning an ordinary journey into a scene of chaos and destruction.

Authorities said a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into one of the train’s carriages, triggering a massive blast. The impact caused two train carriages to overturn and catch fire, sending thick black smoke into the sky. Video footage shared online showed the scale of the devastation, with emergency teams rushing to the site as flames engulfed parts of the train.

The attack also caused significant damage to nearby buildings and more than a dozen parked vehicles, while residents living close to the blast site were among those killed. Medical officials in Quetta confirmed that at least 20 of the injured remain in critical condition, prompting authorities to declare a medical emergency at local hospitals.

The train was reportedly transporting passengers from Quetta’s cantonment area to connect with the Jaffar Express when the attack occurred. The targeted area is known to house security personnel, raising concerns about the attackers’ intended target.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombing, describing it as a “cowardly act of terrorism” and extending condolences to the victims’ families. Shahid Rind, spokesperson for the Balochistan provincial government, also denounced the attack, calling it an assault on innocent civilians and vowing that those responsible would face justice.

An official investigation has been launched as security forces intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those behind the bombing.

The banned militant group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which seeks independence for Balochistan from Pakistan’s central government, has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement sent to media outlets.

The bombing highlights the continuing instability in Balochistan, a province bordering Iran and Afghanistan, where separatist violence and insurgent attacks have remained a persistent security challenge.
