A Young Life Cut Short in West Delhi

A 21-year-old Hindu woman, Muskan Sharma, was brutally murdered inside her residence in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar on August 26, sending shockwaves across the city. The accused, 26-year-old Mohammad Imran, also known as Aqib, was arrested following a police operation two days later. According to investigators, Muskan was a Delhi University student, part-time model, and content creator who had allegedly been facing harassment and threats from Imran for weeks before the fatal attack.

Police stated that Imran, who had previously worked as Muskan’s gym trainer, visited her home in Old Mahavir Nagar during the evening of August 26. CCTV footage reportedly captured him entering the building between 5:40 pm and 5:45 pm, making it a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation.

The Brutal Attack and Recovery of Evidence

According to the police, Imran allegedly strangled Muskan before stabbing her multiple times with a knife. After carrying out the attack, he fled the scene with her iPhone in an apparent attempt to destroy digital evidence that could connect him to the crime.

The victim was discovered by a domestic worker, who immediately alerted neighbors and family members. Muskan was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Investigators later recovered the discarded mobile phone near a drain in West Delhi. Police said the accused had attempted to erase data from the device but was unsuccessful, and the recovered phone became a key element in tracing his movements and identifying his whereabouts.

Arrest After Police Encounter

Following the murder, Delhi Police formed multiple investigation teams and analyzed CCTV footage, digital evidence, and local intelligence to locate the accused. Imran was tracked down in Rajouri Garden on August 27.

Police claim that when officers attempted to arrest him, he opened fire using a pistol. The police team retaliated, shooting him in both legs before taking him into custody. He was subsequently admitted to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital for medical treatment while remaining under arrest.

Relationship Under Investigation

Investigators believe Muskan and Imran had known each other for nearly 18 months after meeting at the gym where he worked as a trainer. Police suspect that the relationship later deteriorated, and Muskan chose to distance herself from him.

Officials are examining whether possessiveness, jealousy, and resentment following the end of their association may have motivated the murder. However, Muskan’s family has rejected the suggestion of a consensual relationship and has maintained that she was the victim of persistent harassment.

Earlier Complaints and Family’s Allegations

One of the most significant aspects of the case is the allegation that warnings had already been given to the authorities. According to Muskan’s family, she approached a police station on July 18 to complain about Imran’s alleged harassment.

Police sources have also stated that Imran had a history of drug use and was admitted to a de-addiction center following complaints made by Muskan’s family. He was released on July 30 after allegedly injuring himself while undergoing treatment.

Her relatives allege that despite repeated incidents of stalking and intimidation over several months, stronger preventive action was not taken, allowing the situation to escalate into a fatal crime.

Previous Allegations Against the Accused

The investigation has also brought Imran’s past into focus. According to police records, he was booked in 2018 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act in a case involving the alleged sexual harassment of a minor.

Police records further indicate that he was booked again in 2021 after allegedly attacking a man with a stone slab, causing severe head injuries that reportedly left the victim in a coma. Investigators are reviewing these earlier cases as part of their assessment of the accused’s criminal background.

Former colleagues have also claimed that Imran worked at the gym for only a few months before being removed over alleged inappropriate conduct with customers. Another employee alleged that he was dismissed after attempting suicide at his rented accommodation.

Questions Over Preventive Action

The murder has intensified public discussion about whether timely intervention could have prevented the tragedy. Muskan’s family insists that the authorities were informed of the alleged threats well before the attack and believe stronger protective measures should have been taken.

The ongoing investigation will examine CCTV footage, phone records, witness testimonies, and previous police records to establish the complete sequence of events. It will also seek to determine whether all required procedures were followed after Muskan and her family reported the alleged harassment.

For Muskan’s family, the central question remains deeply painful: whether earlier complaints could have prevented the young woman’s death. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to clarify the actions taken after receiving those warnings and whether any opportunity to protect her was missed.
