At least 60 people were brutally killed in eastern Congo after fighters linked to the Islamic State carried out a nighttime assault, according to local officials.
The massacre occurred in the village of Ntoyo, situated in North Kivu province, when militants from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a notorious extremist group with ties to ISIS, ambushed residents who had gathered for a burial ceremony.
Colonel Alain Kiwewa, the administrator of Lubero territory where the attack took place, confirmed the scale of the tragedy. “The ADF attack caused around 60 deaths, but the exact toll will only be known later this evening, as teams have just been deployed to the area to count the number of people who were beheaded,” he told The Associated Press.
Eyewitness accounts described the sheer horror of the assault. One survivor, who attended the burial, recalled that around ten armed men descended on the gathering. “I saw machetes. They ordered people to assemble in one place, and then they began cutting them down. I could hear people screaming before I fainted,” she said, requesting anonymity for fear of reprisals.
The ADF, originally an insurgent group from Uganda, has long terrorized civilians in eastern Congo. Over the years, it has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and has increasingly carried out attacks marked by extreme brutality, including massacres, kidnappings, and village raids.
This latest atrocity underscores the persistent insecurity plaguing North Kivu, a region that has endured decades of violence at the hands of armed groups, leaving local communities trapped in a cycle of fear and mourning.
