GOMA, Congo (AP) — Rebels affiliated with the Islamic State launched an attack on a village in eastern Congo, leaving at least nine villagers dead, according to local officials and residents on Sunday.

The assault occurred Saturday in the village of Ngohi Vuyinga, located in the Lubero territory of North Kivu province. The attack resulted in the displacement of dozens of people and the destruction of several homes, as reported by Samuel Kagheni, a local civil society leader.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an IS-linked group in the region, attacked the villagers with firearms and machetes while they were working on their farms, Kagheni stated.

“The peaceful population continues to be slaughtered, yet there’s no intervention from the government,” said César Kambale, a youth leader from the neighboring Vuyinga village.

“Is the FARDC (Congolese armed forces) really conducting offensives against this enemy? Every day, civilians are attacked and killed while our FARDC stands helplessly by,” he added.
