French authorities have arrested a 27-year-old Tunisian man on suspicion of planning a violent jihad-inspired attack in Paris, according to the country’s anti-terror prosecutor’s office. The suspect was taken into custody on May 7 following the launch of a preliminary investigation into alleged terrorist conspiracy, amid growing concerns over a possible extremist plot targeting prominent locations and communities in the French capital. Investigators believe the suspect intended to carry out an attack on a major museum in Paris, with reports indicating that Louvre Museum was among the possible targets under consideration. Authorities also revealed that members of the Jewish community in Paris’s 16th arrondissement may have been targeted, although no exact location had been finalized.

According to the anti-terror prosecutor’s office, the suspect had also explored the possibility of joining Islamic State, also known as ISIS, either in Syria or Mozambique, suggesting a broader ideological commitment to extremist networks beyond France.

French media reports state that the suspect was born in Djerba in 1999 and entered France in 2022 after first arriving in Europe through Lampedusa, a key entry point for migrants crossing from North Africa into Europe.

A forensic examination of his mobile phone reportedly uncovered extensive jihadist propaganda material, including videos promoting extremist ideology and hundreds of images of firearms and knives. Investigators also found that the suspect had used a graphic image of an Islamic State fighter executing prisoners as a profile picture on social media, reinforcing concerns about his radicalization.

In another troubling revelation, authorities reportedly discovered internet searches on ChatGPT in which the suspect had asked questions such as how to make a bomb, highlighting the extent of his alleged preparations and the seriousness of the threat French security agencies believe they may have prevented.
