Bristol has announced its next Lord Mayor, with Green Party councillor Yassin Mohamud set to become the first person of Somali origin to hold the prestigious civic role. His appointment marks a significant moment in the city’s history, reflecting Bristol’s evolving diversity and commitment to broader representation in public office.
Mohamud, who moved to England more than two decades ago, has served as the councillor for Lawrence Hill since 2021. He is expected to be officially sworn into office in May, succeeding Henry Michallat, who will transition into the role of Deputy Lord Mayor.
The position of Lord Mayor in Bristol is largely ceremonial, involving the chairing of full council meetings and representing the city at official functions and community events. Despite its symbolic nature, the role carries significant civic importance and public visibility.
Speaking after the announcement, Mohamud described the appointment as “a deep honour,” calling it both a personal milestone and a responsibility to the communities that have shaped his journey. Reflecting on his path into public service, he said his understanding of politics was rooted not in formal institutions but in lived experience—particularly witnessing longstanding inequalities in communities such as Lawrence Hill. His decision to enter politics, he noted, was driven by a desire to help address those challenges and contribute to meaningful local change.
